Historical Background

RADIOLOGY AT  THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE OF UFRJ [Federal University of Rio de Janeiro]

Education in Radiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro [Federal University of Rio de Janeiro] began on July 15th, 1916, with the creation of the first Radiology Course, which was taught in 30 theoretical-practical lessons by Professor Roberto Duque Estrada, based on material selected from the Radiology Bureau of the Hospital Santa Casa de Misericordia in Rio de Janeiro. This course achieved national recognition, and not only medical students enrolled for it, but physicians, surgeons and practitioners as well.

The Radiology Bureau of the Santa Casa de Misericordia was inaugurated on  February 13th, 1913, and also served as the Radiology Unit of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1965, Professor Nicola Casal Caminha became Head of the Unit.

In the 5th Department of Clinical Medicine of the Hospital Moncorvo Filho, headed by Prof. Luiz Capriglioni, Radiology began to be taught by Dr. Emílio Amorim in the 1950s. Later, this  Department was transferred to the Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho and, as  consequence,  the Radiology Course began to be taught in this last  Hospital by Professor Abércio Arantes Pereira,  consolidating the integration between Radiology and the Clinical Medicine Courses. The education in Radiology was being developed “from Semiology to Clinical Medicine itself, in its multiple approaches to the main pathologies of organs and systems", as written by Professor Luiz Feijó. (Radiologia Brasileira, II (3)-111-4,1978).

At Hospital São Francisco de Assis, education in Radiology began with the implementation of the 4th Department of Clinical Medicine. The classes were conducted by Professor Lopes Pontes in 1957, when Dr. Adalberto Hertal became responsible for the Radiology Service. In 1960, Professor Walter Vieira de Azevedo took over the education in Radiology, along with Dr. Max Agostinho Vianna do Amaral.

The  Department of Radiology was officially implanted  on June 23rd, 1972, at the Office of Professor José de Paula Lopes Pontes, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Professor Nicola Casal Caminha was elected the first Head of this Department. On that occasion, in compliance  with  Decree Number 15 of June 19, 1972, the professors of  Radiology of the Department of Clinical Medicine were transferred to the Department of Radiology. During the First Meeting of the Deliberative Body of the Department of Radiology, the first Professors responsible for the Department’s disciplines  were chosen: to teach Radiodiagnosis, Professor Abércio Arantes Pereira; Nuclear Medicine, Professor José Clemente Magalhães Pinto; and for the position of Coordinator of the Didactic Activities, Professor Walter Vieira de Azevedo. Professor Nicola Casal Caminha was chosen to occupy the position of Executive Director of the Postgraduation Course in Radiology (Master´s degree), assisted by Professors Abércio Arantes Pereira and Otacílio do Carmo Resende, chosen to act as assistant  CoordinatorsAt the end of 1974, after applying for a Public Tender, Professor Nicola Caminha became the first Full Professor of the Department of Radiology, which he assumed, accumulating with the position of Coordinator of the same Department.

In 1975, the first Lecturer Contest of the Radiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine took place, having been approved the following Professors: Abércio Arantes Pereira, Fernando de Souza Penna, Otacílio do Carmo Resende, Waldemar Kischinhevsky, Walter Vieira de Azevedo, José Clemente Magalhães Pinto, Osolando Judice Machado and Lenine Fenelon CostaThe first Tender for Assistant Professor of the Radiology Department occurred in July 1976, having been approved Professor José Raimundo de Lima Pimentel, who assumed the position.
The first Master’s Dissertation in Radiology was defended by Dr. Hilton Augusto Koch on March 28th, 1977.

The first Meeting of the Deliberative Body of the Radiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the UFRJ – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro took place on March 22nd, 1978 at the Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho, where these meetings still take place  today.

On June 12th, 1978, the Faculty od Medicine’s Deliberative Body decided that the subject "Physical Medicine" would be included in the Radiology Department and that the name of the Department would be changed to "Department of Radiology and Physical Medicine".  Things remained that way  for a period of fouryears ; at the end of which new changes occurred and,  consequently,  the subject “Physical Medicine” returned to be part of the Department of Clinical Medicine.

Professor Manoel Camilo Abud replaced Professor Nicola Casal Caminha, Head of the Department, who retired in December 1980.

On October 5th, 1981, Professor Abércio Arantes Pereira was elected Head of the Department of Radiology replacing Professor Manoel Camilo Abud.
In 1983 Professor Abércio Arantes Pereira assumed the position of Full Professor of Radiodiagnosis, after being approved in  a Public Tender.

Later, with the creation of a position of Full Professor  in Nuclear Medicine, Professor José Clemente Magalhães Pinto was approved through a Public Tender and therefore became the first Full Professor of Nuclear Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.  Professor Magalhães Pinto retired on May 13th, 1993.

In 1995, due to the compulsory retirement  of Prof. Abércio A. Pereira in December 1994, a position of Full Professor  in Radiodiagnosis became vacant. Professors Euderson Kang Tourinho and Hilton Augusto Koch ran for the position; having earned the position Professor Hilton Augusto Koch who was nominated and became the new Full Professor in January 8th, 1996.  In 1997,  the position of Nuclear Medicine  was occupied by Professor Lea Mirian Barbosa da Fonseca, after being  approved in  a Public Tender.

The Graduation Course was implemented by Professor Nicola Casal Caminha in 1971 and his  first Course was accredited in 1973.

Initially, the Master’s  Course was taught at the following places: Hospital Santa Casa de Misericórdia, Hospital São Francisco de Assis, Hospital Moncorvo Filho (the last two mentioned hospitals, being University Hospitals of the Faculty of Medicine) and at Clinics of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1978, the University Hospital started  to operate and the Course began to be taught there, with Prof. Nicola Casal Caminha as Course Coordinator, with Professors Otacílio do Carmo Resende and Abércio Arantes Pereira as Assistant  Coordinators. Things remained unchanged until the retirement of Professor Nicola Caminha. In  this new phase, Professor Abércio Arantes Pereira became the Course Coordinator, with Professors Otacílio do Carmo Resende (Radiodiagnosis) and José Clemente Magalhães Pinto (Nuclear Medicine) as Assistant  Coordinators. In 1984 a Program to implement the Doctorate Course was organized and, after its accreditation, the first public competitive examination occurred in 1985 to select Professors. At the end of 1986, Professor Rubens Souza de Araújo Pinheiro became the first  to defend a Doctoral Thesis.

In 1991, in compliance with CEPG Resolution number 04/90, it was possible to release students who had completed their credits, but had not defended their Theses. The defense of such Theses was made in 1992. Fourteen Master´s Dissertations and six Doctoral Theses were defended. In 1995, the Course was completely  overhauled  due to a growing group of students who  had not yet been released. Thanks to the remarkable efforts made by Professor Edson Marchiori, all projects have been  revised, deadlines have beent  set and a new update  to the Course has been carried out . Those who failed  to meet the deadline were excluded from the Course. According to CAPES’  evaluation , the Master´s Course, classified B, received an A, while the Doctorate’s B rate remained unchanged. However, according to the last evaluation (1998), under the new scoring system, the Course was rated 4 (four) and ranked among the best courses of the Faculty of Medicine.

From 1996 to 1999, the Course’s Coordinating Board formed by Professors Hilton Augusto Koch (Coordinator), Edson Marchiori and Maria Expósito Penas, managed to improve  the quality of the Academic Works (Theses and Dissertations), integrationg them  into the Research Lines. This initiative promoted the creation of a Main Research Program, comprising Radiology and other related fields. Thus, today the the Program  has  physicists, biologists, systems analysts, mastologists, gynecologists and oncologists within the same Research Line - "Breast Diagnosis" - which involves national research. The data presented here were extracted  from the Minute Book of the Faculty of Medicine and from the Department of Radiology , as well as from verbal communication with the aforementioned Professors.

Objectives

The main purpose of the Postgraduate Program in Medicine (Radiology) is to train health care professionals in specific teaching and research techniques, knowledge and research methods. It also aims, especially in the Master´s  Course, to increasr  the  interest in education in Radiology in  the educational training  of health care professionals, following the philosophy of teaching the doctors-to-be all they need to know within their area of  specialization, in order to meet the quantitative and qualitative demand - more specifically, the regional demand - of higher education students.  It critically analyzes  imaging methods and the relationship between Clinical Medicine and Histopathology, in order to provide accurate and early diagnoses. In this context, the use of the textbook “A Radiologia na Formação do Médico” [Radiology on Medical Training] and of the “Manual de Medicina Nuclear” [Nuclear Medicine handbook], organized by the Department Professors, becomes essential.
The purpose of the Program is to qualify highly qualified Masters professionals for  the areas of education and research ; and  disseminate the usefulness of integrating  biochemistry, medical physics, biological sciences and dentistry in researches based on the use of ionizing radiations and  the labeling of molecules and cells for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases that the traditional medicine  does not yet have  resources for effective therapeutic approaches.
In the Doctorate course,  students are guided  to participate in research projects, using most reliable technologies available in the field (computed  tomography, magnetic resonance, PET, PET/CT, SPECT/CT), molecules and cells labeled with radionuclides, with emphasis being placed on the study of the most common diseases in Brazil. It  also aims to  prepare students for the development and execution of research within a realistic and critical view of the most current scientific issues,  enriching the  professional expertise of the participants.
